Project Description
Developed VisioTrocar, a trocar-integrated vision system to address the 20% complication rate in chest tube placement procedures, where 65% of complications stem from blind insertion and malposition.
Role: Team Manager & Design Lead | Medical Device Development
Technical Development
Led end-to-end development including clinical research, market requirements definition, design concept creation, CAD modeling, FEA simulation, prototyping, and verification testing. The device features an extensible camera that hooks onto the chest tube during insertion, providing real-time visual guidance to eliminate reliance on tactile feedback.
Performance Verification
Conducted comprehensive verification testing across illumination, total system latency, mechanical integrity, and temperature parameters. Achieved 70ms total system latency, demonstrating competitive performance with existing endoscopes and exceeding clinician-determined acceptable thresholds.
Project Leadership
Managed cross-functional team efforts, assigned tasks, and ensured cohesion between research, design, verification, and documentation workstreams. Collaborated directly with Dr. Hus, trauma surgeon and project sponsor, to validate clinical requirements and design inputs.
Key Technical Achievement: Successfully integrated video-assisted thoracostomy capabilities into a single device suitable for emergency settings, addressing equipment complexity limitations of traditional VATS procedures.
